Jan Barry is an environmental journalist and author of A Citizen’s Guide to Grassroots Campaigns, Earth Songs: New & Selected Poems, and other works. He was lead reporter on “Toxic Legacy” investigative report by The Record (Bergen County, NJ) and featured in the HBO documentary Mann v. Ford. He’s done investigative reports on numerous environmental issues including Vietnam veterans’ health concerns regarding Agent Orange, carried by The Associated Press, New York Times and other publications. He teaches World Sustainability at Ramapo College of New Jersey.

Nikolai Crumb is a video game designer, videographer and webmaster for various clients including Celeb Life and Celeb Staff magazines, Warrior Writers NJ, Food & Water Watch, Sierra Club North Jersey chapter.

When Star Trek debuted on television in 1966, the threat of nuclear war was a grim reality. The USA and USSR were squared off to fight a world war. Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the science fiction series, set out to convey compelling stories about humans and space aliens clashing and resolving in creative ways crises in outer space—crises that mirrored major issues on Earth.

These days, an even grimmer threat is that human technologies have developed synergistic effects that could wipe out life on Earth. “Nuclear winter” from a nuclear war. Wide-spread droughts from climate-shifting weather patterns. Flooding from clear-cut forests and over-heated swelling seas. The cumulative effects of massive machine-enabled human activities could destroy the balance of nature that supports life on this planet.

This log is a look at creative actions by people around the globe to address the precarious state of life on Earth.
